Lake of the Woods 2012 Tournament

FishingCommunity.Org  (FCO) held the first annual Wounded Heroes fishing tournament at Lake of the Woods, VA Thursday October 11, 2012.  FCO  assembled volunteer boaters from the LOW Anglers and invited 10 Wounded Heroes from Walter Reed Medical Center for an all expense paid fishing trip with rods, reels, and tackle and life vests provided for the Wounded Heroes’ use.

Objective: To create a stress free, healing environment that allows our Wounded Heroes to regain their confidence through connecting with nature. Everyone involved is able to be themselves, laugh, listen and relax while having fun!

Event: This is a day to have fun fishing (any species will do!) while remembering the safety and well-being of our Wounded Heroes must be given highest priority.

Pairing of Volunteer Boaters and Co-Anglers (Wounded Heroes) will be determined the night before   the event during the “get acquainted” dinner catered by Bravo, Chick-Fil-A, Firebirds and hosted by WyteStone Suites of Fredericksburg, VA.  If there are more Co-Anglers than there are volunteer boaters we will have two Co-Anglers per boat. What should the Volunteer Boater bring?:

  • The obvious – Fishing Boat with Trolling motor
  • Working live well
  • Extra fishing equipment and tackle (This is an opportunity for you to show your Co-Angler(s) what works)
  • Cooler
  • Extra drinking water
  • Working cell phone
  • Camera to capture those special moments (not all Co-Anglers will want their picture taken so please ask first)


  • Ensure you and your Co-Angler has Fun!
  • No drinking of alcoholic beverages or use of illegal drugs is permitted before or during event hours.
  • Use typical tournament rules as guidelines.  Sample tournament rules attached.
  • Wounded Heroes have a right to privacy about their medical information. Don’t ask what their disabilities are; if they want to tell you, listen. Sometimes it is very apparent, but most often you just have to be sensitive, flexible and adapt to their needs and limitations.
